Unscripted koto, oud, violin, bamboo flute and percussion perfectly accompany these intimate poems freshly narrated from the best-selling book The Gift: Poems by Hafiz Translated by Daniel Ladinsky. Infused with the effervescence of Hafiz, this rendering glistens with the passion of a muscian's lyrical delivery.
Hafiz (1320-1389) was a Persian poet who celebrated the joys of ecstatic love and wine while challenging religious hypocrisies. His works, along with those of the well-known poet Rumi, are considered classical works of Persian and Sufi literature. Hafiz was admired and studied by such writers as Goethe, Ralph Waldo Emerson, Nietzsche, Pushkin and Garcia Lorca to name a few. Daniel Ladinsky is the author of several books of poetry celebrating Hafiz as well as a collection of translations of poems by twelve mystics and saints.
